The benefits you receive
The basic insurance covers medically required benefits in the event of illness, accident and maternity. These benefits are defined in the Swiss Health Insurance Act (KVG) and are the same at all health insurers in Switzerland.
Regardless of which basic insurance model you opt for, the benefits remain identical. The difference between the models is only in the choice of your first point of contact for medical questions.
ÖKK pays the statutory benefits for you after deducting your deductible and excess and the hospital cost contribution.
How the free choice of doctor works
In the event of illness
- In any situation, you yourself decide which medical expert you contact – if necessary, you can contact a specialist directly.
- You must always have your ÖKK insurance card to hand.
- Submit your doctor’s bills and claim documentation to ÖKK.
In an emergency
- In case of emergency, you can contact your nearest hospital or emergency doctor.
- ÖKK will bear the costs for the emergency medical treatment.

With this basic insurance model, you decide for yourself which doctor to go to.
In Switzerland, the free choice of doctor in the basic insurance depends on the insurance model. With the standard model (ÖKK BASIS), insured persons can choose freely from all registered doctors. Cheaper models like the general practitioner, HMO and Telmed models restrict your choice of doctor, as you have a predefined point of contact whom you must turn to first.
You can take out basic insurance with free choice of doctor
if you officially reside in Switzerland or are subject to the Swiss Health Insurance Act under the bilateral agreements (e.g. as a cross-border worker from an EU/EFTA country). Every Swiss health insurer is obliged by law to accept applicants unconditionally, regardless of their age and state of health.
With the free choice of doctor, you keep all your options open: you can choose the doctor treating you freely at any time and go to them directly. If required, you can make appointments directly with specialists of your choice. You retain your free choice of doctor if you move house within Switzerland.
