Save money with generics

Generics contain the same active substances as originator products and thus have the same effect. However, they are on average 30% cheaper.

How you benefit

  • Same effect but for a lower price: Generics contain the same active substances as originator products. However, on average they are 30 percent cheaper, and in some cases up to 70%. This means that your excess is lower when settling benefits with ÖKK.
  • Guaranteed quality: Generics meet the same quality requirements from the Swiss authorities as the originator products. The reason for the generally lower prices charged for the same quality is largely due to the fact that the patents have expired on the active substances.
  • Your contribution for stable premiums: By using generics, you are making a key contribution towards lowering health care costs – and therefore your premiums as well. Together with pharmacies, ÖKK supports the promotion of generics. If generics were consistently prescribed, savings of up to CHF 300 million a year could be made in Switzerland.
  • Lower excess: The contribution for generics is 10 percent. By contrast, an excess of 40 percent has been applied for originator products since 1 January. With this measure, the federal government is promoting the sale of generics in order to curb rising healthcare costs.

What are generics?

Generics are identical versions of originator medicines. They contain the same active substance and have the same therapeutic effect as originator medicines. As they are produced after the patents for the originators have expired and the research costs are lower, they are usually considerably cheaper than originator products.

How do I find out if there is a generic version of my medication?

Ask your GP or a member of staff in the pharmacy for advice. You can also compare the prices of medication by searching for the name of the active substance, the medication or the area of application (e.g. headache, acne, etc.). Many pharmacies offer generic comparison service and can provide you with alternatives if a generic version exists.

Will my excess be lower if I choose a generic version?

The basic insurance cover normally includes an excess of 10 percent on medication that are covered by the mandatory health insurance (after reaching the deductible limit). However, if you choose an originator product even though a cheaper generic version is available, you may be charged a higher excess of 40 percent. By contrast, if you opt for a generics, your normal excess of 10 percent will still apply.

How can I save even more on the cost of medicines?

When you order your medication from the Zur Rose online pharmacy, you’ll receive a 10 percent discount on generics and biosimilars.
